It's true Lex, things were built to last.
I started work on aircraft and the older ones were built far more sturdily and robustly than their modern counterparts. I remember the introduction of the Hawk (as used by the Red Arrows) and I was honestly horrified at just how cheaply it had been put together when compared with the early post war Vulcans, Victors and Hunters.
I remember opening a radio set up and having to involve the air ministry inspection because there were so many poorly soldered joints in it.
