Sadly, many people use the canals as dumps. This is a good effort and I agree, the event does look to be interesting.
Incidentally, the Coventry canal between Sutton Stop and the basin was virtually un-navigable at one time, it's now reasonably obstruction free thanks to volunteers.

It's the same with a lot of places. Stratford canal would have been closed down completely in the 1950's if it wasn't for a couple of canoeists waving their canal permits in the faces of the pen-pushers & starting a campaign to restore it: http://www.stratfordcanalsociety.org.uk/history.html
