It's yet another 'tax' on the consumer. We've been stockpiling bags for a while now.

Me too, although I do tend to use a 'bag for life' for most of my shopping.

Of course, the shops could help the shoppers by providing decent paper bags...

Could be a possibility - more easily recyclable than plastic bags too.
