The 'punishment' if you want to consider it that way would be considered excessive considering the offence. It will be something that the family have to live with for the rest of their days and I daresay it will be passed on my word of mouth to the subsequent generations as well.

Whilst the theft was wrong and deprived someone of something that was rightfully theirs which should, in itself, attract a penalty the end result has to be a tragedy.
