I can only imagine that MI5 & MI6 were using Profumo to feed false information to the Nazis & USSR, or this was another establishment cover up, otherwise this would have been a hanging offence: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-42147156

There was a lot of "naughtiness" went on in the cold war. I doubt we'll ever know the truth. It's a truly fascinating era to study though.
