Apartments plan for proud Bedworth site will put 'intolerable burden' on locals

The historic site makes globally known garments

Concerns have been raised about plans that could see part of a historic site in Bedworth turned into places to live. CoventryLive reported that an application that asks for permission to change the use of part of the Toye, Kenning and Spencer site for 55 apartments has been submitted to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council.

It is reportedly not the first time that plans for places to live on the site have emerged. But these did not come to fruition.

Now the most recent application has sparked a new concern in the community. So much so that a petition has been launched to stop the plans from going ahead.

It says that the plan 'raises serious concerns for the local community.' The petition reads: "Our infrastructure is already stretched beyond capacity. Local GP surgeries are overcrowded, hospitals are operating at full tilt, and schools are struggling to accommodate the influx of students. Adding a significant number of new residents to the area will place an intolerable burden on services that are already at their breaking point, leading to longer waiting times, reduced quality of healthcare, and inadequate educational facilities for children."

The petition adds that the local healthcare and educational services will also be hit. "The approval of this application, without a thorough and transparent evaluation of the area's capacity to support such an increase in population, is not just reckless—it's irresponsible," the petition states.

"We need to prioritize sustainable development that considers both the needs of the community and the limitations of local infrastructure. Before any construction begins, there must be clear evidence and a solid plan to upgrade the existing infrastructure to ensure it can accommodate an increased population without compromising the services for existing residents."The petition demands a 'responsible approach to development that respects the capacity limits of our beloved Bedworth's infrastructure and supports a liveable environment for everyone.'
