About Statford Upon Avon
The local district is named after the town, but the district is called Stratford On Avon whereas the town is officially called Stratford upon Avon. It's early origins were that of an Anglo-Saxon town, which grew into a market town. he name Stratford means street-ford. In Roman times this was a crossing point, a ford, over the Avon.
As of the last Census in 2001 the population is 23,676, but due to major redevelopment of the town in recent years, that figure is likely to have increased.
