There may be provision already for this and I have missed it.. but... how about a posting each week that says something like... This week we welcome <list of names> to <Warwickshire Online - or whatever>. Then, if they haven't posted anything yet we will be aware of their presence and post a welcome message etc.

That feature shows the newest member.
Something I've seen on other forums that might help break the ice, is an Introductions forum, where new members can introduce themselves to the rest of us. |

I use a welcome to the forum thread. Its a bit hit and miss, but it seems to work with regards to those who are actually going to post.

Some people prefer to keep online friendships/acquaintances behind the monitor so to speak. Others like to have real life time as well. When I was living in Edinburgh, on a day off, I sometimes went to Manchester and back for lunch with the lads in the RISC OS group stopping at Sheffield to do the rest of the journey with one of them, then travelling home after a stop at Easy Internet and the pub for a wee drinkie.
