Default Fave Stratford Pub?

I'm wondering what everyone considers to be the best bar in Stratford, I go out there a lot and I'm currently enjoying Oscars bar, even if it is a bit small. I hate to sound like an old fart (because I'm not), but I hate going into a bar where the music is so damn loud that you can't hold a decent conversation with anyone.

'Cross Keys' and 'Hole in the wall' are especially guilty of this, why is it necessary to have the music the same volume you'd get in a super club? It doesn't add the atmosphere, in fact it takes away from it!

While I'm ranting, I may as well talk about how much I hate Chicago Rock Cafe. It would be great if I loved to pay £5 to go into bars with extremely overpriced drinks, moody barstaff who never have a clue who's next to be served, forty minute cues to get served, sticky carpets, stinking toilets, etc.

My favorate Stratford pub is The Pen & Parchment. They've always got some really good guest beers & the music is quiet enough to stay in the background.

I agree with both of you, I can't understand why bars think that the louder the music, the more cool they are. I've been to the Cross Keys as well, and they had this DJ playing some quite heavy dance music as loud as he could! It seems completely rediculous for such a small bar. A place like that would benefit much more by playing some chilled out music.

Chicago Rock is a horrible place. All those chain bars are grim - Chicago Rock is particularly bad.

WOW!

I thought I was the only one who hated CHicaga Rock cafe, yet there are several people right here! My friends seem to love it, for reasons best known to themselves.

Default Re Stratford pubs.

Try the Dirty Duck, down by the Theatre. Lovely on a summer's day! Free entertainment too, when the local wannabe's perform on the green opposite!
Was watching Richard the 111 there last year, before i realised the hunchback was a passer by!

Chicago's does have one plus; it's somewhere to put all the idiots on a Saturday night while the rest of us enjoy the decent pubs.

Red face

It's not a pub, it's not a bar, it's overpriced and it's not as comfy since they removed the cinema seats...but the waitresses...quick my pills...left hand pocket...

I went to Bounce at the Shakesperience last night. It was £7.50(!) to get in, but was a really good night; the music was proper dance - not the cheesy .... you get in Celebs - & there was a good atmosphere too, even the bouncers were friendly!

I wondered in to the Lamplighter for my lunch a few weeks ago. Walked out after 45 minutes of waiting; how long does it take to cook a burger?!? It wasn't as if they were busy.

Went to The Ferry, in Alveston, last night. It's been taken over by some new people and has really improved; well worth the trip out of town.

Default pub noise

Most pubs and clubs think-the louder the music? the more people will enjoy it
Does anyone- excepting us- complain? Perhaps the younger element don't want to talk to each other. Either that or they are already deaf
I keep away now.
My local ...
I went for a meal one lunchtime to meet a friend I hadn't seen for ages. It was ok until the singer arrived and all our conversation came to a halt. He was so LOUD.
On the bright side- he was quite something to look at--and very brave , as he was easily the wrong side of 50-big blonde hair with orange streaks, flash shirt, winklepickers and the skinniest swivelling hips you ever did see.

Iwent to a birthday party last year at a British Legion club.
Now -you would think That would a quiet place to go. Not so--the music? was so excruciatingly loud I didn't say a word all night--just sign language . I got quite good at it.
The problem was , I hadn't seen the birthday boy fo ages so had to phone him the next day for a chat.
