Default Bancroft Gardens

Work has started but its really slow. The design looks like the main problem. Looks like its designed for inner city concrete hell, not a medievel town.

I think the design brief was 'remove any signs of naturally grown trees, replace with sterile and dull looking, uniform trees, cover rest in pathways, maybe some grass if there's any room left over.'

The theatre I think the brief was, 'mostly knock down, and then rebuild pretty much how it was before, oh and add a practise tower for the local fire brigade.'

A lot of the work on the Bancroft seems to have been finished. Lots of paved areas & a lot less grass. Not sure if I'm impressed with it or not really.

The object of the excercise is possibly to reduce the amount of grass so that they use less fuel - carbon footprints and all that - and the money saved from that goes towards the end of year Christmas party for the staff?

It's probably more a case of SDC/Stratford Town Council trying to turn a medieval town - which everyone generally seemed to like - into a 21st century 'Dolly the Sheep' town which no-one will visit because they can go to the same shops in their own town (which is probably cheaper to park in), allowing the councillors to line their pockets as part of the deal.
We can't celebrate Christmas any more because it might offend someone, so the councillors will put the cost of that in their pockets too, and increase the council tax to boot.

Are the lamp posts from around the world still there?

I think so, but I can't say I really notice them anyway - they're just another bit of street furniture.

Some of the walkways around the Bancroft have reopened. They look good; shame about the already tatty looking tarmac by the river though - hope it it gets replaced by the paving as per the rest of the paths.

It must be time for another visit to Bancroft. Have avoided it since they decided to change the way it was, but tarmac? Did they run out of money in the money barrel and resort to a path of tackyness? Thank goodness there are rare times that the UK sees a heatwave that melts tar because it sticks to your shoes. I agree with Lex, replacing with paving would make a much improved appearance.

It could be a case of cutting costs - there was an article in last week's Herald that the project had run over budget (denied, of course, by the contractor!).
