HSBC is part of the worldwide HSBC Group and is wholly owned by Hong Kong-based The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited.
Santander UK plc is a British bank, wholly owned by the Spanish Santander Group.

It pays to know who owns who, if you are worried about being covered under the compensation scheme.
