Default The Loft Theatre, Leamington Spa

Just off to the Loft Theatre , to see , The thrill of Love, is about the Ruth Ellis who was the last person to be hung in about 1955.

“The truth: rarely pure, never simple. Well, not on her side of town. She might catch its eye in a shop-front, then turn up her collar, walk on.”

A hostess in the West End ‘gentlemen’s clubs’, Ruth Ellis works hard, plays hard and dreams of a movie-star life. Yet in 1955, the self-styled ‘blonde bombshell’ is convicted of shooting her lover and becomes the last woman to be hanged in Great Britain. But why was she so keen to admit her guilt, and so loath to offer any defence?

    Hope you enjoyed it, Margaret.
Of course it'll fit, you just need a bigger hammer.

She was only 28 when she was hung, such a tragic and complicated life, you can't help feel compassion for her.
It was a powerful depiction of explosive passions and the the tragic consequences it led to. It was also a brilliant sepia tinged memoir of British social life in the 1950's, a world that is now almost impossibly distant like some vanishing galaxy.
Ruth Ellis herself was clearly a very complex and emotionally insecure, I would imagine a bit like Marilyn Monroe, but, - and I don't think this can be avoided - she was also a dangerous individual.

It was all before my time, but I do remember seeing a film about her.

The Wiki entry makes interesting reading...

Yes I quickly read the Wiki account. I am also interested in getting hold of the book that her daughter wrote.

Yes, my husband had an Amazon account but closed it for a while now. I don't think we want to use it now. I'll give it some thought though. Not long ago I got an out of print book I contacted a Glasgow Antiquiarian book shop for it and struck lucky.
