I really don't know what the fuss about the NI backstop is all about, it'll only come into force of the UK can't agree a trade deal with the EU (negotiations for which haven't started yet, all the palaver over the last 3 years is the the withdrawal treaty): https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-49427674

I think there's a train of thought that it gives the upper hand in future negotiations to the EU and possibly is a disincentive to them to strike a deal.

I still have thoughts that we won't actually leave

Makes sense, I'd not heard that.

Didn't John Major Prorogue Parliament in 1997 or thereabouts?

It looks as thought Boris will get his way with suspending Parliament and the Queen is to make a speech on Oct 14th.

He did. IIRC it was to stop a report on his sleaze ridden government being published. And of course his faux outrage at Boris' actions makes him a bl**dy great hypocrite.

I can't say I'm happy at what I see Boris doing here. One of the reasons for leaving the EU is to bring control back to our Parliament. This seems a rather hypocritical and cynical move.

Whichever way it was going to turn, democracy was going to be sidelined. Comrade Corbyn was effectively trying to use Parliamentary procedure to stage a coup by forming a 'Government of National Unity' to lever himself into power & cancel Brexit full stop.

Absolutely right Lex, democracy is always the first casualty. - History shows that quite clearly.

Fan-bloody-tastic. Our elected representatives can't be bothered even paying lip service to democracy any more. So much for the will of the people.

We certainly live in interesting times.

I'd like to say that I think all of these shenanigans will result in substantial changes to our political system, but I'll not go holding my breath.

For a long time I've believed that our democracy is an illusion, nothing is really challenging that view.

There'll be no change - too much self serving & too many vested interests.

Well, that's that done & dusted; it's just got to get past the idiots in Parliament now: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-50079385

It'll never pass, it's worse than May's 'deal'!

As a brexiteer, I have to say that I'm truly disgusted by what appears to be extremely bad grace from Johnson, sending an unsigned letter to the EU: plus another letter basically asking for them to not agree an extension.

I want out, but it must be done via Parliament: let's face it, one of our reasons for leaving was to take back control. I really don't like underhand politics like this and I pray that this is not what the future holds.

Is anyone in the mood for an election near Christmas?
