Sadly, it's a case of use them or lose them. Bus companies aren't going to run services at a loss, and due to hardship many local council grants have been stopped.
Interestingly, it's alleged that Coventry has bucked the trend and use of buses has increased.
Of course it'll fit, you just need a bigger hammer.
Apparently, it's mostly down to student use.
Well, we do have plenty of them!
Though in fairness, I live well out of the city and on the other side to the universities and I've noticed that the buses are 'fuller' than they were this time last year. I put it down to the council destroying car-parks and the general price of parking anywhere near the centre. I go into the centre once every couple of months and use the bus because it's easier (it goes into the heart of the city) and cheaper than paying parking fees and petrol.

If they want to reduce the buses and expect us to travel on old bone-shakers then they ought to reduce the fares.
It's counter intuitive Margaret, but by cutting the cost of many things they could actually improve their income and profits. Sadly, the 'brains' that are behind most organisations are not equipped to actually think things through and explore other possibilities.
