    This used to be incredibly common with petrol sales in the late 60s, early 70s. I believe it was made illegal, which begs the question as to why it wasn't stopped for other purchases.

    I do genuinely feel sorry for small retailers in this case though. All too often the fees that they have to pay wipe out their profits on a sale. - I was once talking to a publican who had just returned all his card purchase system because he simply couldn't afford it. Sadly, by not being able to accept cards, he lost further trade.
