...........er what? He'd forgotten what he'd got in his pocket which was so precious. Oh, well I cant look now or someone would see me looking.' he thought.
Out of the corner of his eye he could see cat vibrating in a funny way and thought he glowed faintly.
"Wots up with the mog , R Nell" he whined . "Ees givin me the creeps, If ee's goin' t pop is clogs gerrim outside"
'Ee's awright, just ett too much an' now 'ees suffrin'.Nell gave cat the toe of her boot . He jumped up howling. 'See, nowt wrong wiv im' said Nell' squawking with laughter..
Cat slunk outside really upset and went round the back into the old shed.He wanted to think and plan to get away. He decided to look for broom. His magic was very weak lately., perhaps if he snuggled up to broom, some of its magic. would rub off onto him.'I must get home 'he thought but he didn't know where home was. he thought perhaps broom would know and take him there. All he did know was that there weren't any of those bagpipy things there. He was so scared of the noise like a bag of
council cats." Now why did I think that" he thought "what are council cats?"
He crept quietly to the back window to look for broom, making sure..................

the old bat and her Uncle weren't able to see. In the far the corner stood broom who seemed to be twirling the dust beneath. Curiously the hue from the cloud it was causing was shining with silvery sparkles that shone in the sunlight. It grew more and more like a spell which is exactly what it was unbeknown to the two who were still wrapped up in their banal exchange of useless conversation. Cat tuned into the chard of twinkly light that began to course towards the back door. Cleo had stopped humming and swinging; she too was mesmerised by the scene below. One of her legs had dropped off a thread and hung aimlessly in fresh air or nearly fresh which it would be if it was an ordinary house which it wasn't. She gathered it in carefully folding it away trying very hard not to clang and clatter as she did because it was one of the ones the cobbler had cobbled together but also decided to add knobbly knees in his wisdom. She waited to see with baited breath as ....

the chard twinkled towards the door , and then flattened to slide under it. Cleopatra kneed Elvis. 'C'mon darlin', lets go and see what's happening' she tinkled quietly
so that the others didn't hear.they swung Tarzan like to the broken window to watch. The twinkly lit chard made it's way towards the shed. Cleopatra and Elvis followed, (he was having a grumble,) didn't like being dragged around with female."Look Elvis, I hate it here , it's so cold, so if broom's going somewhere its got to be warmer than this." she said. Now he'd grown very fond of his lovely Cleopatra . "Hey girl ' he tinkled sadly, "You mean you're goin' to leave me" She stared at him. "Don't be daft lad, Your'e comin' with me." She flapped her eyelashes--( my imaginary spiders do have lashes by the way) He smiled (but do they smile?) What we waitin' for he said and..........................

as he leant forward to plant a smacking kiss on her furry chops, she flopped her oldest wooden cobbler's leg sideways and he fell off the thread with a huge clatter all of a tangle in the silk. The noise wakened the deaf and the dead, he was red with embarrassment at baring his soul as it had been thwarted at the first hurdle. 'This just wasn't cricket' he thought. Gathering himself together - all legs accounted for he scuttled off into the shed and whistled to Cleo to follow. She quickly saw and understood the terrible misdemeanor of things and twinkling in that unmistakeable way that was only hers she also scuttled off to join him all for safety of course. One eyelash was drapped lop sidedley flapping as she went. (he knew they were false from this and then pondered with hope if the furry chops were also false?) Once inside they were aware of the loud chatter of the old Crone and her Uncle who by some strange happening seemed to be speaking in Uropish- that was a very bad sign because it was neither Spanish, French, German nor Romanian or similar but always had an English tone to each word. This only ever happened when.....

They'd been at the bottles which they found under the sink when they took over the house.
Not sure whether it was fuel or oil for cooking but they didn't care after the first sip. They were off with the fairies-or demons ,
dependinhg how much they 'd had. The good thing was , they were oblivious to what was going on with the others,
Cat gestured to broom who was still twirling away in the corner, and hoping for something interesting to happen . Out of the corner of his eye he noted cat's eyes shining like they used to.
He twirled himself across the room in an excited dance. Once outside cat jumped on the broom and heaved a sigh of relief wrapping his now gently glowing paws around it.he nearly got twirled off. A couple of tinkling noises made him look up. Cleopatra and Elvis were swinging frantically, waving all their combined legs. 'Dont leave us' Cleopatra tinkled, and Elvis in his rougher tinkle, joined in.
'Wherever she goes'........................

Nobody knows but I dooooo.....' and then Cleo needing to shut him up so as not to alert the two inside of their escape shouted in a twinkly whisper' Oi- Shurrup, yerm gis us in nou't but trouble.' Cat and broom were by now whizzing around the shed in a frenzy because broom's magnetic field was being mullered by the mangle in the corner- ' too much iron, bally old iron ' is all that could be heard from a voice somewhere in the air. It must be broom's lost voice all of them thought. They hadn't ever heard broom talk before but still even so the most important thing was in their minds was that cat was now swinging perilously upside down as the broom flew from wall to wall in slalom type manoeuvrings. Neither Elvis, Cleo or Cat had ever seen or done slalom before but for sure they were seeing it done in airskiing there and then. 'Sshhhhh... 'whispered Cleo in her twinkly shout,' You'll let the old bat know with that clatter going on.' Then she fairly shouted for real . Broom, Slow thee reet up before ....'

those two get wind of us.We don't want them coming with us,they're too much trouble...anyhow whats with accent . This is Scotch country not Lancashire . You
darlin' ol' show off". Elvis chickled, ( instead of chuckling.') "Ah wee then ma wee darrrrrrling if ah get mesen a sporran will ya sliil love me?" Cleopatra gave him a push, "Course I will, now lets get movin'" She swooped down onto broom as it whizzed by, dragging Elvis by a leg. They both landed on cat who was still hanging on to broom,"Wheeeee, lets get going" she shouted. Cats fur began to hackle and spike, his eyes spun and he was enlivened again. "Wow this is what I needed.' he thought and flicked his now spiky tail tightly around the back of broom.Broom took the hint and he whooshed out of the door.He started off , then stopped and twizzled for a while,

to go. Not for any salmon poaching this time- Still need to let that one settle,' Broom thought quietly as he also wondered about Cleo speaking In Lancashire speak. She wasn't from Lancashire, In fact he didn't think she was from anywhere except the nest under the back stairs in the old shack. It was a quandary but then maybe she'd got mixed up from all that Uropish chat between Nellie and the Uncle. Her thoughts turned back to where to go and so he announced to the passengers,' Its time for a new place with out night Gnomes and Nellie poking about. Somewhere calm where food was plentiful and free so they can't be chased by some awful guardian with a mission.' With a telepathic signal for all to hold on tight and Catnav locked on to sonic hyperspeed a sudden serge of power and they whizzed straight up and out through the door in a blur of silvery dust. It didn't seem long before Broom was slowing down and a phut, phut,pppphhhhtttt... noise could be heard and they were sort of swaying and dropping height. Cat was blinking furiously wondering what to do as he kicked at Broom to get going again and to stop messing about. Maddening twinkly shrieks could be heard coming from the brush end of broom where Elvis and Cleo were secreted again at which Cat whacked with his tail to shut them up. With one almighty....

swoop broom seemed to shudder to a stop in midair.Cats eyes were like spoons , he was so scared, "Watch out were for a crash land" he shouted to broom. But broom was not daft, it was fed up and bored by being messed about so thought he'd scare his passengers with a hover.Cleo and Elvis weren't bothered too much , they were light enough to float down but were afraid they would get separated on the way down so they both hung on to the broom handle.
Eventually broom descended not knowing where it would be but it was needing a recharge. A big bump and they were down,
flung and spread out across some hard rocks.Cat rolled down a partcularly slippery rockand just saved himself from a large wave
washing him into the sea.He scratched himself up again towards broom and hung on.. Didn't know what sea was but knew he didn't
like it, far too wet for a cat. Looking up , far up , he could see a light which went on and off as he watched.
Broom found a scrap of power again and revved up waiting, making sure everyone was on board, then glided up to a door at the top of some rocky steps, hitting it with such a thud they fell off again..
Cleopatra and Elvis clung together, quite terrified.Suddenly the door opened with a jangle. An old man with a bushy grey beard over his long jumper and wearing tall wellies peered out swinging a lantern even though it wasn't yet dark.
"What ye want?" he growled "This is my lighthouse and if you're from the government ye're not comin' in. Oi've bin he 40 years with me cats an ye're not teckkin it away from me I'd rather....................

fill me boots with rocks and jump off that crag to drown at sea than be tek away. Ger off out of it.' Then he paused as his eyes adjusted to the sodden cat stood in front of him holding a broom. His face softened with a smile as he leant forward to stroke the poor bedraggled moggy. ' Hmmm- 'ow did yer ger ere, then matey? What shifty livered land lover dropped yer anchor in this neck of the landless sea scape? Ahh ner mind, yer can't tell me so come ere.' with that he scooped cat up and held him in whilst taking the broom to one side and slinging it in the corner of the hall way that opened up in front of them. He did wonder why a cat was holding a broom. ' Almost human that is' he thought out loud. They climbed up the winding stairwell that went round and round and up and up for what seemed like forever to Cat. Eventually they reached a landing which opened out to a warm cosy seated area where there were lots of bowls of milk dotted all around. The old man grabbed at a towel and began rubbing Cat down. He'd never been treated so kindly and began purring immediately. Before long as he was quite enjoying that experience a saucer of milk was put under his nose and slow strokes along his back completed the moment. He trilled with joy and began lapping. His belly was really very full and he spied a cushion on a sofa onto which he planted himself, curled up and felt safe enough to snooze. After some while or what he thought was some while, he became aware of the familiar twinkling of Cleo and Elvis who both sounded quite out of breath. He got up and went to pier over the bannister to see if he could see them far below. He scanned the expanse of the stairwell and tried tuning into where the out of breath twinkling was coming from. Suddenly he spotted them, they'd slung a cobweb abseiling type thread at one level onto the bannister and across to the next. They were literally heaving themselves up the empty space of the stairwell coughing and spluttering as they went. Elvis went first slinging the thread to get a good grip and then Cleo hauled her self after. Cat held himself quite still because he knew if they saw him happily ensconced upstairs observing their toils to find him, they'd be furious. ' Ooh, AHhh, Errr, ere you are, grab my leg' Elvis called out to Cleo as she swung precariously at one point not so very far below where Cat sat watching. As she launched forwards and tried to grab at one of his legs, instead of .....

Which she missed and was tossed into the room all undignified.
The old man noticed out of the corner of his eye, especially as she tiptoed across to cat (on all her tiny toes in a very dainty way_ and seeing how cat welcomed her with a loud PURRRR he realised they knew each other.'Never seen that before" he said, "a cat and a spider as friends, in fact 'I aint seen a spider for 40 odd years"
Suddenly Elvis staggered through the doorway, exhausted.Cat got up and slouched over to him , brushing him gently with his tail,
just to say 'are you ok mate'.
"Well arll be daggered, ow many more ah wonder" He looked out onto the stairs. "Can't see no more" he mused "but the more the merrier, it gets lonesome 'ere". He couldnt believe his eyes when Cleopatra and Elvis clung together , all legs tangled for a minute.
Well nar, this all meks a change--gets borin' on me own.he said to himself. Wonder wot spiders live on? O'll ave ter look it up in me
cyclopedica in a minit"
There was a slight scuffle and one by one, by two and by four, an assortment of cats came out from behind everything in the room. ALll shapes, colours and sizes.
Now, our cat being clever could add upand counted 15 As usual when he felt endangered he turned a very luminis orange and the
others drew back, wondering what he was, but instinctively realised he was harmless as long as they behaved,,especially with the spiders,,they were not to be cats meals. Cat's eyes twirled and darted, a strange sound- kind of mewey growl emerged from his orange mouth. They understood this catsy language. He was Lord! They sat in a circle around him, backs against the lighthouse wall.
All this time the old man, took his pipe out and sat with mouth open. "Must be goin' mad he thought or it's a dream.
The man gave himself a pinch- really hard, it hurt and he howled..
"Well this is a kettl o' fish ah didun expect ah must say. Oh and torkin' o' fish'............................................. ............

' I got a few on the go, must tek 'em out to cool.' He went over to aga and removed a tray with foil parcels all neatly lined up to attention. Carefully unwrapping them, he waved away the steam that escaped as he drew back the sleeve of each foil cover. The collection of cats were by now eagerly tuned into the proceedings. Their eyes fixed on him as he worked and their tails twitching with excitement. Cat wondered if there was any salmon available. He mused at the catch from earlier travels and the batch of fresh salmon they'd left with the old crone and her Uncle. ' It was too late now, they'd have been poached and eaten, best hope for similar here' he thought to him self. Having calmed down somewhat and now no longer bright orange, Cat had resumed his usual black cat look. He sat regal as best he knew how to surrounded by the circle of cats who were not at all interested in him or his companions. Cleo and Elvis had shuffled sideways to a cupboard half open and were peeping out from the crack in the door. The old man began putting portions of poached mackerel on to saucers and laying them out around the floor. To each plate and in an orderly fashion each cat lined up waiting his turn. All seemed to have their place and knew to wait in turn. 'It was a curious thing to observe.' thought Cat who'd never waited for anything very much at all. The old man turned towards him with one last saucer which he placed in front of cat and stroked the sleek black coat as he did. Cat sniffed at the meal that was being offered. ' Mmmmm, it don't smell like salmon, not ad this un afore,' thought Cat as he licked at the food carefully. ' It was really quite scrumptious' he thought as he then dived in with gusto and licked the plate clean. Purring with that annoying trill, well it annoyed Cleo who began twinkling equally annoyingly, he rubbed around the old man's legs in approval hoping there just might be another morsel or two coming his way.m The old man laughed leant down and gently patted Cat's head. ' Yer like that then, 'tis all 'til tomorrow. I'll av to get the rod out and catch more this evening as the sun goes down.' With that the old man sat in the chair with his pipe and gazed out to sea. The other Cats all lay around on various cushions and couches asleep, they seemed not to have a care in the world but then....

in the background Cleopatra was fuming. She nudged Elvis awake."All that way up them stairs and what do we get, eh,,nothin'.and it looks like nothin's all we are gonna get, and I 'm allergic to fish."her roundish eyes looked wet."Brings me out in nasty blobs" Elvis was upset seeing his beloved like this.He too was hungry. 'What would you fancy m'dear, We could have a mooch around while this lot is napping. Cleo brightened. She didn't know where they were so this was another adventure for them. They swung out of the cupboard and across all the sleeping cats, and the old man, and through the little doorway at the other side of the room, and found themselves in a tiny room with cupboards all over the walls.Only one was ajar. They squeezed through the gap. The shelf was full if tins and jars.'This is no good' Elvis moaned, 'we'll starve'
'Typical man' Cleo smiled at him as she perched on a jar which had lost it's lid. 'I'll let myself down here' she said standing on the edge, 'and you hang on to one of my legs, and I'll see what's in it". Elvis leaped on to the jar, and grabbed two of her legs so that she could slide down the inside. She landed plop , into something sticky which covered her, and howled a loud tinkling frightened sound which caused Elvis to quickly haul on her legs. She arrived at the top again. Elvis laughed so much when he saw her covered in sticky gunge, he nearly fell into the
jar.
'You can laugh' Cleo said, 'but have a lick of this' She moved up and leaned on him. They stuck together.
'Marmalade, my very favourite she murmured. They sat together licking away 'till they were full .
'Must get a drink" she said, Come on there may be some milk left"
The swung down and headed to the door leaving a track of marmalade across the floor. Suddenly the door was pushed open and the old man entered. He saw the sticky trail and the two spiders. He was an old seadog and
kept his place shipshape and sparkling clean "What the...................

shivering monkeys have we got 'ere? Spiders and two of 'em. The little blighters, I'll have em right now' He raised his right boot to tramp down on the two who were stuck to the spot with fear and marmalade. Cleo shrieked her loudest most shrill scream which pierced the film on the jam jars on the top shelf causing a pinging sound all around the cupboard. It stopped the old man in his tracks as he wavered on one leg with his arms out stretched in counterbalance. To Elvis he sort of resembled a Ti Chi artist in mid manoeuvre except he was portly and stout with corduroy breeks and he couldn't quite imagine him in a competition of that nature. It offered the two their chance so they both pulled and hauled at each other's legs to prize them off the sticky floor and then they ran towards Cat who by now was sat up eyes wide and looking. They raced towards him and shuffled under his tail, wrapping it over them selves as cover, panting as quietly as they could so as not to be heard and discovered again.Cat licked at the sweet goo that seemed to be all over his tail. He was careful not to uncover the two and carefully folded the tip of the tail around to tuck them in. The old man had now regained his composure and was down on all fours following the trail of marmalade that very oddly seemed to be heading towards the cat. In his experience cats played with and then ate spiders so maybe this is exactly what had happened, He shrugged and stood up reaching for the bucket and cloth to wipe away the messy trail. As he hummed while filling the bucket, Cat ushered the two from under him and as they ....

quickly swung across the room,Tarzan like, to the corner where broom was leaning. They snuggled between the
bristles and woke it up. Broom started to hover gently so that the old man wouldn't notice. it was bored, and
had been sulking since they arrived. It wanted adventure.and somewhere in his mind he recollected an old hag
of a witch,but couldn't quite remember.
Out of the corner of his perceptive eyes cat noticed the movement. He'd been watching and although the food was delicious he was getting claustrophobic stuck here in these tiny circular rooms. Also he needed a proper pee, and if they stayed much longer the smell here would get even more noticeable than it was already.. As old man was kneeling wiping up the mess, cat sneaked across to broom and hid behind it.. He was excited now , his eyes starting to glow. Clever cat knew that man would have to leave the room --hadn't he said something about getting his rods out to fish?. He tried hard to transfer his thoughts to broom so that when the time came they must make dash for it. No use bothering about the spiders-their little brains wouldn't understand-they'd just have to hang on and go wherever broom took them. They didn't care anyway as long as they stayed together.
Broom gave a few small bobs of excitement as if to say"understood mate" and cat glowed gently.
Early next morning, as old man struggled to put on his long wellies, they were ready. As he opened the door, an
icy blast blew in as broom, with cat and spiders gripping on like grim death flew past the old man and out of the door. "What the?........................

Bejangles brass monkeys was that?' Said the old man to him self, seagulls and anything else listening. No more of it he tought as a tiny getting tinnier dark smudge on the horizon flew past. 'Slow down, slow down' screeched Cleo who was hanging by her silkiest hairs thread to cat's tail and Elvis was howling as he tried to untangle one of his legs from hers lest he was dragged off to shark food some where they had no idea where. Broom heard and slowed to a hover above a choppy sea. Cat tucked his tail in and in so doing gathered the two arachnids in. ' Hmmmm, puuuurp!' cat said in a defiant statement. ' we're going to sea without a paddle!' He laughed in cat language which none of them understood but thought this may be trouble ahead; which it was before very long. Cat set to Catnav which they all knew as a well set manouvre.Seeing what he was doing, weaving frantically Elvis and Cleo made a 'dug out' in cat's tail. Suddenly with a call of 'Tally Ho' they climbed high vertically through a barrage of Seagulls and a spew of spume.Coughing and sluttering ....
