This is something I've been wanting to do, help children or adults read. But I'm not sure if coaches have to go through a CRB check. I should imagine we do if we are working with children or vulnerable people.
It is very hard for me to imaging never being able to read, as I had no trouble from a young age , I picked up reading easily at infant school, as most of us did. So it is really very puzzling and intrigues me how people grow into adulthood not being able to read. I understand of course that it can be hard for those suffering from dyslexia, so I don't know what or how a coach approaches that problem...

“I doubt sometimes whether a quiet and unagitated life would have suited me - yet I sometimes long for it.”
- Lord Byron.
I also find it strange that people go through life without learning to read, but, as you say, dyslexia etc. often provides a reason.
