Why is Stratford Mop called so?

I do remember being taught why when I was at primary school in Stratford, but it escapes me now and has been bugging me. Perfect place to ask really, does anyone know?

Years ago (we're talking in the 100s), the Mop Fair was a recruiting fair for the local big houses, trades etc - i.e. people were looking for 'Mrs Mop'. The Runaway Mop was held a couple of weeks later for those who hadn't settled into their job, had run away & were looking for another one.

i believe they had to stop calling it a fun fair because of the trade descriptions act....
