Default Exam Blues

I've just started studying for an exam through work, but am struggling to build up any enthusiasm or interest in it. Does anyone have any tips for successful study?

I'm going to be starting the very same sort of thing soon. The work I do is related to the course I'm going to be doing so my main motivation is being better at my job, and hopefully ultimately have a better salary

I'm a web developer, so learning more on this and increasing my skills is quite interesting.

The only advice I can give you is that you've got to really want to do it. If you cannot motivate yourself, then either you are unhappy in your job, or you're in the wrong profession.

Make it interesting or relevant. Try and get it to relate to something you like rather than it just being meaningless academic drivel.

I made that same application when learning html. I really was bored out of my tree doing the theory bit and thought it made more sense to go straight in and create a website using html then learn to find out why something doesn't work. However, it had to be of subject that interested me. Umpteen pages later I was having a great time and my website kept growing. I then got brave and attempted a bit of JS. Yes, I could have used wizards to do the work for me but I wouldn't have learnt a lot. So, with my trusty Acorn computer and !Edit (Acorn programmes have a pling in front of them) away I went. That website is offline now, the company that hosted it for me closed down. I need to do some work on it and maybe one day it will go back.

The key for me was to enjoy and have fun with it. The subject didn't matter as to me as much as the learning of what was required to put it together. - For the curious ones it was simply a fun website based on Bumblee Bee -

Learning HTML was good fun for me. Then for years I didn't do anything. Then about 2 years ago, I got interested in it again and realised something called CSS now existed that enabled you to get rid of the streams and streams of formatting code on a site, and style everything globally across your whole site by changing just one file. I thought this was great and has started another long and exciting learning curve for me. The beauty of internet and the technolgies it uses, is there's always something new to learn

My first ever website is also now offline. It was a site I did with two university colleagues. It was hosted by Tripod, but it has been that long since I accessed it, that it disappeared when Lycos took over.

I'm trying a slightly different approach to what I was doing - sitting down & reading until my head hurt!- and studying for 45 mins or an hour, then giving myself 30 minuted break. I've also deferred my exam until next April (was ment to be taking it next week) and taking things a bit more slowly, which seems to be helping a bit.
I think my main problem is that I've been studying for this qualification for so long (3 years) that I've reached my boredom threshold! Thankfully, this'll be my last exam, after which I'm done with it.

That's why I have decided to do distant learning. You can work in your own time, without being pressured into handing assignments in

Well, managed to fluff my exam. Here's to retakes & trying to study during this unusually warm weather we're having!

Well done Lex. It's always hard having to redo/retake exams. Hoping for a good result for you as I am sure you worked hard on the studying.

Thanks Shiz. Have just treated myself to 2 weeks in Devon as a reward - a week puttng my feet up with a crate of beer & a few days wondering around Dartmoor. Made the decision to take my life in a completley different direction too; more details to come....
