Unhappy Coventry City Farm

At some point or another many of you may have visited this valuable inner city farm and therefore realise how important this Charity is to both its local community and the rest of Coventry and Warwickshire! If you believe this is a worthwhile cause then you will be deeply saddened to hear they have been forced to make the painful decision to closed (please see full article in todays Coventry Evening Telegraph). This charity not only provides an educational experience for young people but allows people of all ages and abilities to Volunteer in their community. If you believe this is an important part of Coventry then please reply to this message or start a petition within your business, local school or community to present to Coventry City Council, in order to try and make them realise how vital the City farm is.

It's a shame that the farm's had to close. I never went there myself, but the people of Coventry seemed very fond of it, looking through the previous thread on WOL.

Is the land also being viewed by the council as another site for housing?

Red face

Update - Well after the Council published in the Telegraph that they were going to hold 'urgent' talks with the Management of the farm and that "the city council says it will do "everything possible" to make sure the city does not lose the much-loved charity". The farm management were then told at this meeting that the Council could not help this year or in the future!!! Was this just a publicity stunt to make the caring people of Coventry think that they really give a dam????

I would like to highlight that in previous years the Council have donated £10,000 to the farm and that this money did not come from tax payers and was part of a government grant - where is this money going now?? the redevelopment of our city centre maybe.

So unless a miracle happens before the end of April this inner city farm will close and all primary schools and other groups that visit the farm will be forced to go else where, staff who have put 20+ years into this charity will lose their jobs, those people who enjoy volunteering in their community will have to find something else and the children of Hillfields and other areas in Coventry will not have the benefit of this free facility, in which they can have contact with various animals and play safely.

Please visit the link below to sign the Coventry City Farm petition.

More comments welcome.

Thank you

Default City farm

I see that Prince Charles is to visit Coventry next week
He will be visiting a muslim centre and then -wait for it- a farm within a school
which the pupils have developed .
What a pity he could not have visited the City Farm, which has now closed due to lack of funding by the Council.
This could have been a greater amenity if the council had wanted to keep it.
It now appears that it will cost well over the annual £10,000 grant to upkeep when the land is handed over to the Wildlife trust.
