I personally think it a gimmick

Same here! A lot of British companies seem to be doing well from the space industry, maybe they can contribute some money - a potentially good bit of marketing!

A long-term space project that might be worth keeping your eye on: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-30352472

I'm not too clear about the capsule bit. Is that the part that will eventually be manned?

Yes it will be manned eventually, but it looks like it's going through some thorough testing first.

Will the capsule always have to land in water? I mean, its not ideal is it, especailly in the Pacific ocean where it is potentially dangerous.

With the world being in the state it now is, the whole idea is a waste of money which is needed here.
A way of someone rich to get richer. How dare they expect the people to contribute.
If they haven't the money - too bad, that's life-and also how we got into this mess.
(I'm not really such a misery)

Anyone remember the 'ozone layer' holes in the Earth's protective mantle?

What say these holes are caused, not by aerosol propellants, but by projectiles (rockets etc.) piercing the fragile layer, which then doesn't repair itself?

Just a random (or maybe not) thought.
