Getting the right treatment in Rugby

December 9, 2013

The Hospital of St Cross and the local Clinical Commissioning Group have joined forces to promote NHS services in Rugby and to guide people to access the right service at the right time.

It’s important that people know where to go when they have a health problem. Accessing the correct service when there is a need will save time and ensure that people receive the most appropriate treatment.

The Hospital of St Cross offers a wide range of services from blood testing to outpatient appointments, and there is an Urgent Care Centre where trained Emergency Nurse Practitioners can deal with less severe illnesses such as suspected broken bones and minor burns.

If the condition is very serious or life threatening, for example a suspected heart attack or severe breathing difficulties, then the person should attend University Hospital in Coventry where the expert knowledge and best facilities to treat serious illness are located. In these cases patients should dial 999 for an ambulance.

Mark Pawsey, MP for Rugby said: “I recently spent time at both the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby and University Hospital, Coventry to see at firsthand the facilities for urgent care. I am keen to ensure that Rugby residents and my constituents receive the best treatment possible and know when it is appropriate to go to St Cross to get the care they need. For this reason the exercise by the local NHS is a very positive step.”

Meghana Pandit, Chief Medical Officer for University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust said: “With a move to a fully nurse-led service at the Urgent Care Centre at St Cross being complete by the end of September, it is more important that people know where to go to get the right treatment.

“At all times we want to ensure that the care people receive is not only appropriate but safe.”

Jeff Cotterill, GP and Clinical Lead for NHS Coventry and Rugby CCG said: “The Urgent Care Centre at the Hospital of St Cross can deal with a range of urgent problems and GPs and pharmacies in Rugby provide a wide range of services to people that will deal with the vast majority of health issues, but when the symptoms suggest that the problem might be very serious or life threatening the expertise is available at University Hospital, Coventry.”

A new leaflet and poster has been produced to help local people choose the right place to go for the right treatment.
