In a bid to establish the true nature of the world’s most famous playwright, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and English Speaking Union brings you, ‘The Great Shakespeare Debate.’

Taking place on 27 – 28 February 2007 in his birthplace of Stratford-upon-Avon, the Great Shakespeare Debate will bring together over 60 contestants (across the UK) between the ages of 16 and 18 to battle it out to establish the truth behind possibly the world’s most famous playwright.

The Great Shakespeare Debate is a collaborative venture between The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and the English-Speaking Union. It sees 24 schools competing for the coveted Pragnell prize, a splendid silver plate from a design based on treasure found in the Spanish Armada made by local Stratford jeweller George Pragnell Ltd.

Presenting the award to the most persuasive and engaging school is Donald Sinden, renowned for his own Shakespearean roles. He was recently presented with the Shakespeare Birthday award, created by George Pragnell’s, for his involvement with RSC productions and is said to be thrilled to be involved and presenting the award to the winners.

The Great Shakespeare debate is a unique opportunity for students to examine all of Shakespeare’s plays in a new light and get a glimpse into the excitement which can come from unpicking literature. Debate is power and power is a pleasure.

The Shakespeare Debate Final will take place on Wednesday 28 February, 5pm at the Shakespeare Centre and admission is FREE. Early booking is recommended to avoid disappointment. T.01789 204016
