Wow I'm impressed that you read it all. I don't think I've ever read a wikipedia page in it's entirety - apart from the very short ones. There's something about reading from a screen, I've never been able to put my finger on it but I just don't seem to have the same attention span as when reading from paper. It could just be the signal/noise ratio on the internet is a lot lower, so I've just got accustomed to skimming through everything to find the bit I'm interested in.

Ahh I'm thinking now it may have been Authur C Clark that first came up with the idea of the space elevator, so not far off with H G Wells. I'm pretty sure he (Authur that is) was the first person to sugest that satellites could be put into geostationary orbit - so you can thank him for satellite TV among other things.
